Familie Allwein—An Early History. This is part of a series of books about the history of the Allwein family in America, a family descended from an 18th century German immigrant Johannes (Hans) Jacob Allwein and his wife Catharina.
In this first volume in the series, the author relies on a rich tapestry of diverse sources to establish what is known about the early history of his immigrant ancestors. He traces their European origins and their dispersal throughout the American frontier, using ship lists, early county tax records, land warrants and surveys, county maps and atlases, military service and pension records, draft registration cards, estate and other probate documents, church registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths, church histories, cemetery records and tombstone inscriptions, federal and state census materials, family genealogies, local histories, and the public archives of Pennsylvania colonial history. His careful documentation of all sources and attention to detail make it possible to reproduce the author’s findings and re-examine his conclusions.
